World Scholar’s Cup – Astana round – March 2018

British independent school in Haileybury Astana

“We came, we saw, we conquered!”

After Day 1 we were feeling pretty happy – all of our Junior teams and most of our Senior teams had won all 3 of their debates and we were confident that we knew all about such diverse topics as pangolins, Panda Diplomacy and the theory of propinquity – amongst many other things! The collaborative writing task and the individual general knowledge test were behind us.

On Day 2 we started with the team general knowledge quiz – the clicker round and massive points could be won or lost by gambling on the last few questions - all went relatively well. In the afternoon, Bakhtiyar took part in the Talent Show, very ably playing the dombra, and Tomiris was chosen as one of the best 8 WSC participants to debate on stage in front of a crowd of over 500 pupils. The motion “Resolved: That teenagers would make good diplomats” was very confidently argued against by Tomiris and her new team mates.

Then came the moment of truth – how well had we actually done?!! Well, the answer was – very well! Tomiris was nominated as best overall competitor in the Junior Division and Oleg was nominated as best overall competitor in the Senior Division.
