On Saturday, 30th November, Haileybury Almaty opened its doors to a gathering of future leaders and changemakers for the annual Haileybury Almaty Model United Nations (HALMUN).
This prestigious event brought together over 70 delegates from schools and universities across Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries, including Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. HALMUN 2024 was a melting pot of diverse ideas, rigorous debate, and collaborative problem-solving, with participants engaging in discussions on some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
Committees and Agendas
This year, HALMUN featured five committees, each tackling critical global issues:
1. United Nations Security Council (UNSC): Focused on ensuring the protection and reintegration of children affected by armed conflict.
2. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA): Discussed enhancing access to justice and improving the quality of legal systems for all.
3. World Health Organization (WHO): Examined strategies for preventing and mitigating the potential impact of an H5N1 influenza outbreak.
4. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP): Explored how artificial intelligence can enhance productivity and drive sustainable economic development.
5. Экономический и Финансовый Комитет: Analysed the economic impact of large-scale migration on labour markets.
The topics challenged delegates to think critically, consider diverse perspectives, and present innovative solutions, fostering their understanding of diplomacy and global governance.
Distinguished Guest Speakers
The event was graced by prominent guest speakers who provided invaluable insights to inspire and guide the delegates:
• Vlastimil Samek, Representative of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, delivered a compelling address on the importance of global cooperation in tackling contemporary issues.
• Timur Kunanbayev, Managing Director, Senior Country Officer, and Head of Investment Banking (CIS) at J.P. Morgan, shared his expertise on global economic trends and sustainable development.
• Samal Kadyrkulova, former Secretary General of Kazumo, shared her expertise and experiences in leading an international MUN organisation, inspiring delegates to embrace leadership and diplomacy.
Their presence underscored the importance of leadership, strategic thinking, and collaboration in addressing complex challenges.
The HALMUN Community
HALMUN was not only a platform for intellectual growth but also a testament to the power of teamwork. With the support of 10 dedicated volunteers and 10 experienced chairs and co-chairs, the event ran seamlessly, ensuring a professional and engaging experience for all.
The diversity of participants, hailing from various countries and educational institutions, added richness to the discussions, enabling the delegates to learn from each other and expand their global perspectives.
