Over 40 Haileybury Almaty students from Years 11 and 12 recently braved the rugged terrain of the Ak-Bulak Valley as part of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh International Award practice expedition.
Over three days, they hiked more than 25km in small groups, navigating mountainous trails with maps in hand, cooking their own meals outdoors, and adapting to the unpredictable challenges of Spring weather—including heavy rain and sudden sunbursts.
This was no ordinary school trip. It was a test of perseverance, collaboration, and problem-solving under real conditions—guided by supportive and trained staff. With each step, our pupils demonstrated the values of the Award: self-development, independence, and the courage to grow beyond the familiar.
At Haileybury, we believe in shaping more than academic success—we nurture resilience and lifelong memories. We look forward to seeing these students take on their qualifying expedition later this year.
